American Book Company.

The American Book Company was formed in 1890 by consolidation of Van Antwerp, Bragg and Co., A.S. Barnes and Co., D. Appleton and Co., and Iveson, Blakeman and Co. The collection includes the records of the company which manufactured books and educational materials in several locations in the United States, with head offices in New York City; the book list embraced all subjects at all educational levels. The collection is primarily textbooks, including several editions as far back as 1840 of the McGuffey readers; also included are business records and illustrations.

Arkell, W. J. (William J.), 1856-1930.

Papers of the American publisher, journalist. One commemorative menu, rest is business and personal correspondence, largely in connection with the Judge, a weekly magazine of wit and humor which began publication in 1881 in New York. Correspondents include August Belmont, James G. Blaine, George W. Childs, Charles A. Dana, Chauncey M. Depew, Joseph W. Drexel, Stephen B. Elkins, Joseph B. Foraker, George Jay Gould, David B. Hill, Collis P. Huntington, Robert Ingersoll, Levi P. Morton, John C. New, Bill Nye, William W. Phelps, Thomas B. Reed, Whitelaw Reid, Samuel Sloan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and William Kissam Vanderbilt.

Bannister, Henry S.

Papers of the American printer and antiquarian, founder of Albany, New York, firm which bore his name. Collection includes Munsell family genealogy, letter to William Leete Stone, letters about Munsell, invoices and receipts, photographic portraits, and biographer David S. Edelstein's research on the life and work of Joel Munsell.

Benjamin, William H.

Papers of the American publisher of the National Farm News, a publication devoted to the interests of the American farmer; includes incoming correspondence from congressmen, senators, and governors concerning a campaign by the National Farm News for rural road development.

Brisbane family.

The Brisbane Family Papers are a collection of documents, mostly correspondence dated 1819-1965, by and about the Brisbane family. The collection has been divided into three sections: items relating to social reformer Albert Brisbane (1809-1890); those of his journalist son, Arthur (1864-1936), and his descendents; and documents pertaining to journalist Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman ("Nellie Bly") (1867-1922).

Browder, Earl, 1891-1973.

Papers of the General secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership. Following his expulsion, Browder lectured and wrote about Marxism and represented Soviet writers and publishers for publication in the United States. Collection includes correspondence/subject files (1879-1970) relating to Marxist philosophy, the workings of the C.P.U.S.A., Browder's role within the Party and to Browder's business ventures as well as legal files (1938-1958); manuscripts (1924-1967) of Browder and others, including Browder's manuscripts for articles, books, memoranda, news releases, pamphlets, reports, and speeches; and memorabilia including personal files and photographs of Browder and his family, and some colleagues. Notable correspondents include Roger Baldwin, Daniel Bell, Bruce Bliven, Rudy Blum, Louis B. Boudin, Juan Antonio Corretjer, Theodore Draper, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, William Z. Foster, Joseph Freeman, A.A. Heller, Lotte Jacobi, Alfred Kohlberg, Robert S. Minor, Tom Mooney, Paul and Eslanda Goode Robeson, Anna Rochester, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jack Selford, Joseph R. Starobin, I.F. Stone, John Strachey, Anna Louise Strong, Dirk Jan Struik, Norman Thomas, Harry Frederick Ward, Sumner Welles, and others. Also included is a holograph letter of greeting from Mao Zedong. The collection also includes Browder's personal library and other published materials.
